Airbnb has had a big year in 2024, making waves in the travel world with new ideas and innovative moves.

In September, the company reopened its platform to new experience submissions after suspending them in 2023. It also introduced new experiences hosted by celebrities called Icons, a marketplace for co-hosts and hinted at even more expansion beyond its usual offerings. Alongside this growth, Airbnb has continued to battle against short-term rental regulations, and remained outspoken about the positive impacts it believes these rentals bring to cities.

At The Phocuswright Conference 2024, Airbnb’s Chief Business Officer, Dave Stephenson, shared the latest updates, including the company’s push for more personalized offerings, how it’s using artificial intelligence (AI), and its efforts to reimagine how users find and plan trips.

Focusing on Personalization

A big focus for Airbnb is making the travel experience feel more personal. With its Icons program, the company is gathering more insights about what travelers really want, beyond just picking a destination or activity. As Stephenson explained, “It’s about understanding what a person desires when they want to travel and knowing more about just the place and the thing that they want to do.”

Experimenting With AI

After acquiring AI company GamePlanner, the company brought in new tech and expertise to help tap into the potential of AI to improve its platform. Stephenson said that these fresh tools and perspectives will help shape the future of the platform. He highlighted Airbnb’s collaboration with ChatGPT, revealing that the company considered integrating its chatbot functionality. However, he doesn’t see this becoming the search interface going forward.

What's Next?

While the team considered using chat-based tools to help travelers plan trips, the results didn’t quite hit the mark. “We actually went a fair ways to kind of designing something that we might put on to Airbnb, and we were not satisfied with it. The tools and interface right now, using chat as a method to come plan a trip, we just don't think it's actually sufficient. And, it didn't actually meet our kind of design criteria,” Stephenson said.

He disclosed that, instead, Airbnb's CEO Brian Chesky is leading the charge to reimagine how users search for and discover travel ideas and inspiration on the platform. As the company continues to innovate, it remains focused on delivering uniquely tailored experiences while also expanding its offerings and navigating regulatory challenges.
