In early December, I had the chance to go to the Caribbean island of Curacao for the first time. I found the island safe, charming and more gorgeous than expected.
Part of my experience was due to my good fortune with hotels.
While I spent the first few nights of my trip at the Hilton Curacao, I settled in for a final two nights at the Sunscape Curacao Resort, Spa and Casino. This property was a real charmer for more reason than one, and I would definitely go back.
The Sunscape Curacao invites you right in with an open-air lobby, plenty of seating and a small snack and coffee bar. Checking into my room was a breeze, and I was happy to find I had a partial view of the ocean and one of the pools.
One of the biggest benefits of this property is that it flanks a very large stretch of beach from end to end. So, no matter where your room winds up, you'll either be ocean front, ocean view or extremely close to the water.
My room itself had a large king bed, a couch for sitting, a television with a surprising number of American stations and a large bathroom with a sitting area. It also had a mini fridge with some bottles of beer, soft drinks and water. The only peculiar thing I found was that the beer bottles required a bottle opener they didn't supply. (Trust me, I looked everywhere.)
In terms of amenities, the big winner is the expansive stretch of beach. While you definitely need water shoes in some areas outside the resort, the water-and the overwater sunsets-were spectacular.
The property offered a dive shop (I didn't use) and a giant rock-climbing wall, although you do need tennis shoes to use it. They also had water sports, a small casino and an Explorer's Club just for kids.
Plus, this resort is a good deal. You can score special promotions for up to 55 percent off your stay as well, and don't forget that kids stay free at this property with paid adults.
