Daniel Langlois, a French-Canadian hotelier, philanthropist
and owner/operator of Dominica’s Coulibri Ridge resort, died on the island with his partner, Dominique
Marchand, on November 30.
The bodies of the couple, who had been reported missing for
several days, were found in a badly burned car that local authorities
identified as belonging to Langlois, according to local press reports.
Police have detained and are questioning three suspects,
according to Dominica News Online.
“The entire community on the island is in mourning following a devastating incident,” said resort officials in a December 3 statement. “Daniel and Dominique were trailblazers in so many ways, most recently as founders and operators of Coulibri Ridge Resort,” the report reads.
“Their commitment to sustainability set a standard in the
tourism industry, and their passion for the environment and helping others has
touched the lives of many who experienced the magic of Coulibri Ridge,” the statement continues.
“Their legacy will continue to live on through the efforts
of The Daniel Langlois Foundation, the Resilient Dominica Project (REZDEM), and
the Humane Society of Dominica.”
The partners opened the luxury eco-resort in October of
2022, after first coming to the Caribbean nation in 1997.
Dominica government officials presented Langlois with a
Meritorious Service Award for contributions to sustainable development and
research within the hospitality and business sectors, according to Dominica
News Online.
