Kimpton Hotels & Restaurants revealed this week that it's launched an investigation into a potential credit card breach at some of its properties.

In a statement released Tuesday, the boutique hotel operator said that it "takes the protection of payment card data very seriously."

"Kimpton was recently made aware of a report of unauthorized charges occurring on cards that were previously used legitimately at Kimpton properties," Kimpton added. "As soon as we learned of this, we immediately launched an investigation and engaged a leading security firm to provide us with support."

KrebsonSecurity.com reported earlier this week that it heard from "three different sources in the financial industry about a pattern of card fraud that suggested a card breach at close to two-dozen Kimpton hotels across the country."

With the investigation just recently getting underway, Kimpton also encouraged individuals who have used their card at a Kimpton property to closely monitor their payment card account statements.

"If there are unauthorized charges, individuals should immediately notify their bank," the San Francisco-based company recommended.

Assuming Kimpton's investigation confirms a breach, it wouldn't be the first hotel chain impacted. Several big name companies have fallen victim to payment card breaches of late, including Hyatt Hotels, Hilton Worldwide and Starwood Hotels & Resorts Worldwide.

Kimpton, which currently operates more than five dozen hotels across the U.S., was recently acquired by the InterContinental Hotels Group in exchange for $430 million in cash.
