Kimpton Hotels & Restaurants, which operates the trendy and beloved boutique hotel brand, has outranked all other hospitality and restaurant companies on Fortune’s list of 100 Best Companies to Work For.
The 21st annual list, which is generated based on employee ratings, lists Kimpton as the sixth best place to work. The 2018 ranking marks Kimpton’s ninth year on the list and also its highest placement to date, putting the hotel and restaurant company amid such well-regarded companies as Edward Jones and Salesforce.
Additionally, Kimpton is the first hospitality company ever, in the list’s 29-year history, to break into the top 10.
“Kimpton’s special brand of magic is 100 percent attributed to our employees. We don’t believe in strict policies and processes, we believe in people—and our guiding principle is hiring employees for heart and encouraging them to provide warm, intuitive service,” Mike DeFrino, CEO of Kimpton Hotels & Restaurants, said in a statement. “We’re incredibly honored to once again be named to Fortune’s Best Companies to Work For list because it reflects our unwavering pledge to treat our people with dignity and respect. We like to say we’re in the humanity business, not just the hospitality business.”
Kimpton is known for its fierce commitment to fostering an environment where employees are empowered to make decisions that create meaningful connections with guests and each other.
The highly personal experiences are a signature of the brand and reflect the company’s ongoing celebration of its employees who are encouraged to bring their whole selves to work.
“The 2018 100 Best are true leaders,” Michael C. Bush, CEO of Great Place to Work, said in a statement. “In the face of competition, change, and financial constraints, they consistently prioritize building the trust, pride, and camaraderie that fuels business performance. And they’re doing it at scale for everyone, regardless of who they are or what they do for the organization.”

In addition to landing on Fortune’s 100 Best Companies to Work For list, Kimpton has been recognized on numerous other Great Place to Work lists including Best Workplaces in Chicago 2017; People Companies That Care 2017; Best Workplaces for Parents 2017; Best Workplaces for Diversity 2017; Best Workplaces for Women 2017; Best Workplaces for Millennials 2017 and Best Large Companies in the Bay Area 2017.
In celebration of its continued appearance on the list and of the people who have helped the company achieve the annual honor, Kimpton is launching its first ever ad campaign. To be called H.U.M.A.N.S., the campaign will highlight why humanity is the one, often elusive amenity that matters most to the modern consumer.
Being created by Circus Maximus agency, the campaign will also reveal what Kimpton calls its secret sauce—the “ios system of people,” which marks the contrast to the many hotels where robots are now replacing humans.
