Quintana Roo Nears 100k Hotel Rooms

Quintana Roo, home to some of Mexico’s top beach destinations, is nearing a magic 100,000 mark.
The destination currently has 97,606 hotels rooms with more than 8,000 currently under construction, meaning that the Mexican state will round the corner to 100,000 in the near future, says an article in Reportur.
According to an earlier report, eight new hotel projects are scheduled to begin during the second half of 2017, bringing new properties to Cancun, Mayan Riviera, Isla Mujeres, Holbox, Bacalar and Mahahual.
In Cancun, one project is expected to deliver 2,400 rooms in its first phase alone, followed by another 6,000 rooms during a second stage. Isla Mujeres is scheduled to receive 1,000 new rooms this year. Other regional projects in smaller resort towns such as Holbox call for more intimate and exclusive offerings.
It’s not likely that Quintana Roo’s newfound hotel inventory will stand vacant. The destination already competes for visitors with top locales around the world, including Europe and the U.S., according to Reportur.
Hotel occupancy is high and should be able to sustain the impending growth. According to the state secretary of tourism, Marisol Vanegas, occupancy rates remain high and stable.

Cancun and Puerto Morelos' occupancy was at nearly 83 percent in May; Isla Mujeres was 70 percent and occupancy in the Riviera Maya was 90 percent.
Airport traffic into the destination was also on the rise according to Vanegas. Passenger growth at Cancun’s airport was at more than 20 percent in April. Chetumal and Cozumel airport traffic is also climbing.
Vanegas told Reportur that the region had a “solid, mature, integral and competitive product,” and that it was still experiencing growth.
