Gazing at the brilliant blue waters and cloudless skies from an intimate beach on a shade-covered lounge chair is the kind of deluxe Caribbean experience that's harder than ever to obtain.

With top-drawing regional destinations hosting millions of travelers each year at all-inclusive resorts defined by high-volume, non-stop activity, idyllic afternoons spent enjoying five-star amenities, facilities and services, wonderfully slow-paced settings are rare indeed.

And that's just part of what makes a stay at the Four Seasons Resort Nevis, located on the smaller sister island of St. Kitts & Nevis, something very special. Nevis' intimacy, exclusivity, fascinating people and landscape combine well with the relaxed, white-glove luxury of this 189-room resort, generously laid out across 350 lushly landscaped acres.

Nevis visitors encounter an appealing combination of serenity and adventure, whether they're golfing alongside green vervet monkeys on the 18-hole Robert Trent Jones II designed course, or diving into the sea to explore nearby reefs.

Later, travelers can follow up with a personalized spa treatment and begin the evening with a sample of the Caribbean's signature beverage at the Crowned Monkey Rum Bar. Guests can end the day with dinner at Mango, the resort's open-air waterfront restaurant, as the sun sets over Pinney's Beach.

Here are five reasons why the Four Seasons Nevis offers a rare luxury Caribbean experience:

Upscale Accommodations

Guest rooms are located in one- and two-story cottage-style buildings spread out over landscaped hills and walkways. Rooms with ocean side, beachfront and Nevis Peak views measure 490 to 560 square feet and feature private patios and balconies.

Classic contemporary décor features flora and fauna themes and incorporates images of Nevis' ubiquitous and playful green vervet monkeys. Suites are available in Ocean, Luxury and Plantation categories and measure 710 to 1,761 square feet, all of which accommodate three adults or two adults and two children.

The resort's 84 private villas offer guests an array of luxurious residences featuring distinctive designs along with gardens, balconies and outdoor decks. Five-bedroom residences accommodate six adults and five children and include a fully equipped kitchen and private pools. Villa accommodations include a personal ambassador as well as a golf cart for transportation around the resort.

Contemporary Cuisine

Dining at the Four Seasons Nevis means premium facilities and gourmet cuisine, providing the true definition of a luxury resort experience. Esquilina offers a breakfast that features international favorites and local specialties. During the evening, their Mediterranean menu features a crudo bar with raw seafood, charcuterie and fresh fish.

Mango is a relaxed, open-air restaurant that overlooks Pinney's Beach and features Caribbean and Latin-infused dishes alongside spectacular Nevis sunsets. It's an ideal vantage point to catch the last rays of the day, and diners can preface their meal with a delicious rum cocktail created by Kendie Williams, the resort's award-winning Nevisian mixologist.

Guests can also pair up with a local dive master and a Four Seasons Resort Nevis chef on a morning hunt for their lunch, in the form of a Caribbean spiny lobster. Once caught, visitors return to the property with their catch, where they then partake in a beach barbecue.

A waterfront spot for lunch, located near the beach and between the resort's two pool areas, Kastawey Beach Bar serves fresh fish, grilled dishes, salads and burgers. Even better, it also includes a sit-down bar for afternoon and evening drinks. Twenty-four-hour room service is also available.

The Crowned Monkey Rum Bar's sophisticated and swank décor creates a marvelous atmosphere for pre-dinner drinks, light appetizers and charcuterie. The perfect place to go for a nightcap, mixologist Kendie Williams will recommend a distinctive Caribbean rum to enjoy with a fine cigar.

Fine Facilities

The Four Seasons Nevis' spacious grounds include an 18-hole golf course that offers sweeping views of the property and of St. Kitts, 10 tennis courts that include clay, hard-court and astroturf surfaces. Other facilities guests can find include a full-service spa, three free-form, infinity edge pools, three lounges, private event spaces and a business center.

Golfers can arrange for professional instruction or opt for complimentary weekly clinics and a golfer's conditioning program. Tennis programs include private and group lessons, complimentary weekly mixers and match play opportunities.

Families will find a "Kids for All Seasons" program featuring fun and educational activities for children and teens delivered by a dedicated staff. The quiet, calm-water beachfront is semi-private and never populated by more than a dozen people. If they prefer, guests can opt to spend the day in a beach cabana with food and beverage service.

The resort's half-mile stretch of Pinney's Beach also includes its private 7,000 square feet pier, from where guests can enjoy panoramic perspectives of Nevis Peak and the Caribbean Sea.

The pier hosts a "Sundowners" happy hour daily between 5 p.m. and 6:30 p.m., which includes drink specials and a live ceviche station. The pier is also available to host group events, romantic dinners and fitness classes.

Coming Changes

The property will close from June 1 to September 30 for a series of renovations. The existing Garden Pool will be re-designed as a rectangular infinity edge pool, with the pool deck raised 12 feet to create a single site line from the lobby, across to the pool and out to the Caribbean Sea. The new pool will also feature new pool cabanas.

The current Cabana Restaurant will be replaced with On the Dune, a pool and beach restaurant offering a casual fare option during the day with a farm-to-table menu, premium wines by the glass and a customized cocktail program. In the evenings, the facility will transform into a vibrant beachfront party space with live entertainment.

Amazing Activities

A Four Seasons Nevis stay would be incomplete without some exploration of the island's 36 square miles. Guests can find fascinating natural and man-made attractions, from the 3,232-foot high Nevis Peak and the ruins of historic sugar mills to several charming restaurants located in historic downtown Charlestown as well as boutique resorts and beachfront across the island.

With the resort located in close proximity to virtually every activity, Nevis is easy to traverse. Alexander Hamilton's birthplace is a must-visit in Charlestown, Funky Monkey Tours offers open-air ATV excursions that circumnavigate the entire island in less than three hours and one of the island's signature beach bars, Sunshine's, is literally across the beach from the Four Seasons.
