Disney Cruise Line's Disney Wonder canceled a call at Puerto Vallarta today, May 12, becoming the third ship to bypass the popular Mexican resort area in recent days.
The Disney Wonder spent the day at sea instead, joining Royal Caribbean International's Jewel of the Seas. Celebrity Cruises' Infinity canceled a May 10 call.
The cruise ships are avoiding Puerto Vallarta because of increased violence between drug gangs and local authorities since the beginning of the month.
Carnival Cruise Line said the Carnival Miracle would still visit Puerto Vallarta today, although it did cancel some shore excursions that explore areas outside of the main city "in an abundance of caution."
Although it appears the violence has eased, the U.S. government did recommend that its diplomatic workers "exercise caution" in the state of Jalisco, particularly in rural areas. The Canadian government also issued a warning on May 6, saying that some municipalities in Jalisco popular with Canadian tourists, including Puerto Vallarta, Guadalajara and Chapala, are experiencing an increase in drug-related violence.
The Disney Wonder's altered itinerary was confirmed by Disney Cruise Line. The ship is operating a two-week Panama Canal cruise and will refund port fees associated with Puerto Vallarta, the company said in a letter to passengers posted on the Disney Cruise Line blog.
