Travelers at Miami International Airport should have been focused on preparing for Hurricane Irma. Instead, they were forced to deal with the aftermath of police shooting a knife-wielding man.
According to ABCNews.com, an unidentified man attempted to enter the international terminal from a restricted area on the tarmac Thursday. Terminal J is the home of airlines including Air Canada, Lufthansa and Aerolineas Argentinas.
Miami-Dade Police Director Juan Perez said authorities saw the man walking on the tarmac before fleeing into a room allegedly armed with a knife. The suspect then tried to elude police and enter the terminal through the ceiling, but officers confronted him and were forced to shoot him when he didn't put the weapon down.
The suspect survived the police shooting and was transported to Jackson Memorial Hospital's Ryder Trauma Center to be treated for his injuries. He is in stable condition.

Officials said no passengers or employees were at risk during the shooting, and it was unclear how the suspect gained access to the restricted area of the tarmac. Authorities do not believe the incident was terrorism related, but they are not ruling out the possibility as the investigation continues.
