A United Airlines flight was forced to make an emergency
landing in Los Angeles on Monday after a fire was reported in one of the plane’s
engine compartments.
According to The
Associated Press, United Airlines 2127 was about 40 minutes into its flight
from Los Angeles International Airport to Newark Liberty International Airport
in New Jersey when it was forced to return to LAX.
Pilots reported a possible engine fire in one of the Boeing
787-9’s engines, forcing air traffic controllers in Los Angeles to call a
temporary ground stop while the plane made its emergency landing, according to
the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA).
Once the aircraft was safely on the tarmac, video shows passengers gathering their bags inside before using emergency slides to evacuate the area. Emergency and fire crews met the plane when it came to a stop and extinguished the smoking engine.
No injuries were reported from the estimated 250 passengers, flight crew, or emergency personnel on the scene. The travelers were moved from the taxiway following the evacuation and taken to the terminal, United Airlines said in a statement.
One of the passengers on the plane, Francesca Nardelli, told
KTLA.com
about what it was like during the emergency: “We didn’t know what was happening
because there was no announcement, but it was definitely chaotic and scary.”
