The U.S. Embassy and Consulate in the United Arab Emirates issued a security alert yesterday urging Americans in the area to consider departing the Middle East.
Departure Options
Commercial flights are currently operating from UAE international airports with limited availability. Travelers should not go to the airport unless they have a confirmed ticket and have been explicitly advised by their airline to do so, as access to airports is restricted to confirmed travelers only.
Overland routes to Oman and Saudi Arabia provide another way for travelers to find commercial flights, though congestion has been reported. The Embassy advises Americans to seek one of these two options if possible.
Americans choosing to stay should shelter in place to the best of their ability. The Embassy recommends remaining in your residence or hotel and staying away from any windows.
Embassy Operations Suspended
The Department of State ordered non-emergency U.S. government employees to evacuate the UAE due to the threat of armed conflict on March 3. Because of this, the U.S. Embassy in Abu Dhabi and the Consulate General in Dubai are closed, and all routine services are suspended until further notice.
Passport services for Americans with or without a valid U.S. passport will resume once security conditions permit. For now, travelers are advised not to approach the Embassy or the consulate for any reason.
Actions to Take
Travelers should maintain communication with family and friends to inform them of their status, have travel documents up to date and accessible, find a secure location and pay close attention to messages from local officials.
Americans should also consider enrolling in the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP) to receive safety and security updates from the U.S. Embassy.
