The U.S. State Department has lifted its travel ban barring government employees from visiting Playa del Carmen, Mexico.
The U.S. Embassy in Mexico also walked back restrictions on government personnel using ferry services between Playa del Carmen and Cozumel after Mexican officials recently began implementing new security procedures.
According to The Riviera Maya Times, metal detectors, surveillance cameras and enhanced security systems are being installed at local ports.
The security alert was issued earlier this month on the heels of a ferry explosion that injured more than two dozen people en route to the tourist hotspot.
"As a result of recent incidents in Playa del Carmen, Quintana Roo, Mexico, Mexican municipal, state, and federal entities have put into place new security procedures in tourist areas," states the Embassy's latest security alert. "Effective immediately, U.S. government personnel are permitted to travel to all parts of Playa del Carmen. Effective immediately, U.S. government personnel are permitted to use ferry services between Playa del Carmen and Cozumel."
Officials encourage visitors to be aware of their surroundings, purchase travel insurance that covers them in Mexico and contact the Embassy or Consulate if they are in need of assistance.
