What if autonomous cars didn't just drive themselves but evolved with the changing terrain?

It's an interesting concept that plays out beautifully in Honda's Great Journey campaign.

Thanks to Map Project Office and Mori Inc., we get to see what an imaginative journey from Nairobi, Kenya to Manaus, Brazil would look like if time, money and manufacturing constraints were no object.

We get seven self-driving cars that have their own special personalities - each solving the issue of traversing the terrain with their own particular solution.

It's a rather brilliant notion.

Consider the advent of the autonomous car. It's something that will get us from Point A to Point B, but let's stretch the figurative legs and walk around the subject.

There is presumably no need to drive or navigate for your world-trekking machine.

Now it's feasible to create a car that can meet the demands of specific regions of the globe.

The following captivating video highlights the project.

Inc.com's Kevin J. Ryan delved into the design portion of the project. In speaking with designers, Ryan found that initially the teams wanted to make just one car that could complete the hypothetical journey.

As we have all seen, it was problematic to conjure one car to rule them all. Instead, the teams looked at a car that could handle very specific demands, leading to conveyances made in model form and resting in the land of fantasy.

Map's Jon Marshall, who can be seen in the video, is quick to point out that the cars are plausible.

Marshall conveys to Inc.com, "They're not fictional. Wherever we were deploying some technology or some engineering, we were keen to make sure it was done in a way that feels appropriate and realistic."

They remain concepts. However, items like the Road Tripper uses Honda's gyro steering system, which is similar to how the team infused real-life technology into all of the concepts.

Perhaps one day autonomous car concepts such as these can become reality, taking us on a real road trip wherein the journey is truly part of the joy of travel.
