Enrique de la Madrid, Mexico's Secretary of Tourism, will give a live tourism update during an upcoming Mark Travel Corporation webinar, scheduled for May 30 at 10 a.m. CST. During his presentation, he will give a candid overview of the state of tourism throughout Mexico.
de la Madrid will also be joined by representatives from a number of area tourism boards, including Cancun and Riviera Maya, Los Cabos, Puerto Vallarta, Riviera Nayarit and Mazatlan.
Tourism in Mexico has skyrocketed in recent years, and the nation has jumped from being the 15th most-visited destination in the world in 2013 to the sixth-most-visited in 2017.
A part of the nation's success can be attributed to Mexico Tourism Board's campaign, "Mexico: A World of Its Own," which promotes the nation's diverse natural attractions, traditions, cuisine, architecture and charming, lesser-known towns.
"We are so much more than sun and beach, and we are now giving travel agents and tour operators a better idea of all that we offer," said de la Madrid in a recent interview with Vacation Agent Magazine.
The country also continues to promote itself through a variety of market-segmented campaigns, such as "Viajemos Por Mexico!" which was designed to speak to the nearly 35 million Americans who identify as being of Mexico decent. Specifically, the campaign encourages them to return to visit the home of their ancestors.
Not content to rest on its laurels, Mexico is aiming even higher in the years ahead, with officials having recently announced they plan to attract 50 million travelers annually by 2021.
With that growth comes an unprecedented number of new flights, new hotels and resorts, new convention facilities and other new tourism infrastructure throughout the nation, which can make selling Mexico a challenge for travel professionals who don't keep up with their homework.
