Relaxing still rules when it comes to taking a vacation. In a new survey conducted by GfK that included responses from people in 17 different countries, 59 percent preferred to "relax and take it easy" rather than do something active.
Thirty-five percent of those surveyed said they would rather take an active break.
Sixty percent of men want to relax whereas 58 percent of women said the same. When it came down to choosing an active holiday, men and women were statistically identical at 35 percent.
Travelers from France and Italy apparently want to get out and enjoy a vigorous vacation, with nearly half of the people in both nations voting in favor of activity. Conversely, Brazil (71 percent), South Korea (66 percent) and Japan (also 66 percent) were more inclined to kick back.
Those who chose an active vacation were fairly easily pinpointed by age: Teenagers were the most inclined to choose a vacation that kept them on the go. Families with teenagers were also more inclined to want something more experiential.

However, age was not necessarily a determining factor in taking it easy on vacation. In fact, the group most likely to just chill were in their forties. Yes, Gen-Xers, oftentimes with young children in tow, were the most likely to seek a relaxing vacation. That's not hard to understand, what with the everyday demands on their schedules.
"The value of these findings for the travel industry lies in combining this self-reported data with our travel insights, which are based on live forward booking data from a growing number of sales points," Laurence Michael, global lead of travel and hospitality research at GfK.
"With this multi-layered approach, we understand what is being booked and by whom - helping our clients to fine-tune their audience segmentation and identify customer potential, both globally and at country-specific level."
