Mod Laptop 2, This Is Ground, $399, thisisground.com

For the past few weeks I've been test-driving what is basically my mobile office. It's the Mod Tablet 2 from an American company, based in Los Angeles, called This is Ground. You'll start to see more and more of these types of product reviews on TravelPulse, as we seek out innovative products and share them with you based on real-life travel experiences.

If you follow me, you know that I'm never in one place for too long. Nobody, especially me, wants to be dragging around a bunch of different bags and devices, so it's refreshing to find something that gets it just right.

The 13-inch Mod Laptop 2 made the most sense for my needs, as I utilize a MacBook Air, an iPad, an iPhone and the corresponding ancillaries that go along with them (the case comes also comes in 11-, 12- and 15-inch models). I also like to have a small writing pad for thoughts and ideas, a pen to jot them down and a place to keep my business cards. The Mod Laptop 2 accommodated all of these items and did it in a very organized way.

Understand that I always start out with the best intentions, but my previous bags inevitably end up as a large dumping ground of intertwined wires, headsets and more. With this case, everything has its place and makes me feel a lot more organized than I would otherwise. It also has a variety of inserts that clip in via three magnetic snaps, creating another layer of organization for user. I've been checking out their Traveler Insert for longer trips.

It's also a very low profile piece, something I appreciate as I hop on subways in New York City or run to my next meeting. I try to avoid being "that guy:" the one who hammers you with his messenger bag or back pack as he walks down an airplane aisle or squeezes between a couple of straphangers. You can carry it in your hand like a classic clutch or use the accompanying strap, as you see in the picture below.

That's me heading into CBS Studios on 57th Street in New York City to do my regular travel segment.

This is Ground is based in Los Angeles and launched in 2013. Their approach to products is not unlike Apple, with a focus on design first. Their factory is down the street, so an added benefit is the fact that you are getting a product made in America, and one that doesn't need to be shipped from far-flung locales.

After using the Mod Laptop 2 for the past month or so, I'm sold on the slick design and the functionality of the piece. It would make a great gift for anyone who wants to combine style with functionality. Or better yet, just order one for yourself.
