A Coastal Escape to Seward

Nestled between the plunging mountains of Kenai Fjords National Park and the piercing blue waters of Resurrection Bay, Seward is the ideal destination to unplug and unwind. Surrounded by beautiful scenery and built on a rich history, the charming coastal city is well worth taking the time to explore.
In the summer, the Alaska Railroad’s Coastal Classic Train provides daily round-trip service between Anchorage and Seward. The train schedule is ideal for day trips, as it allows seven hours between arriving in Seward and departing for the return journey to Anchorage.
Although, there is certainly enough to see and do in Seward to justify spending a night or longer.
Here is a look at a few options available through the Alaska Railroad:
What to Do
The Real Alaska Tour
A great way to see Seward in a day, this tour takes travelers back in time to discover the city’s history, visit “Mile 0” of the iconic Iditarod Trail and have lunch at Resurrection Bay. From embarking on a guided dog sled ride to hiking to the face of Exit Glacier, this excursion highlights the history and natural environment that defines Alaska.
Glacier Cruises
Alaska is home to more than 100,000 glaciers, and, just like snowflakes, no two glaciers are the same. Breaking away from valley glaciers, the tidewater glaciers form jagged edges that break into small icebergs as they flow into the ocean.
Cruise through the narrow arms and fjords for coveted views of these icebergs and snow-capped mountains from the vessels’ 360-degree viewing platforms.
Listen to tales from the captains and scan the water for marine wildlife like whales, sea lions, puffins, gulls and mountain goats. Trips range from a few hours to a full day on the water and often include meals, beverages and snacks onboard the sea vessels, depending on the experience guests select.

Where to Stay
Kenai Fjords Wilderness Lodge
Located 12 miles outside of Seward on Fox Island, the private, waterfront cabins overlook the pristine Halibut Cove. Relax inside the rustic cabins or hit the ground running with activities like kayaking and hiking through this secluded oasis.
Kenai Fjords Glacier Lodge
Deep in the heart of Kenai Fjords National Park on Alaska Native-owned land in the Pederson Lagoon Wildlife Sanctuary, these cabins offer one-of-a-kind views of Pederson Glacier and wildlife. Kick back in giant rocking chairs, listen to the flowing water and cast a fishing line from the lodge’s waterfront.
Connect with family, friends and fellow travelers over the four-course, homemade dinner and unwind with a nightcap of local craft beer or a relaxing visit to the wood-fired sauna.

Harbor 360 Hotel
Located in Resurrection Bay’s small boat harbor with panoramic views of the Kenai Mountains, Harbor 360 Hotel is a short walk from downtown Seward. Warm up in the on-site hot tub, stroll through nearby art galleries and coffee shops, indulge in fresh Alaska seafood at Ray’s Waterfront Restaurant or grab a pint from Seward Brewing Company.
Whether coming with a large family for a reunion or a large corporate group, the Alaska Railroad can accommodate many kinds of travelers that want to visit Alaska’s seaside town of Seward and the many experiences this destination affords.
To make sure everyone stays together, ask to block seats when making reservations with the Alaska Railroad. This option works best for 15 or more people.
