Travelers can take voyages to the past with AmaWaterways.
Cruise down the Danube river for a connection to the legendary Petrovaradin Fortress in Serbia.
On this journey, travelers will "tour well-preserved barracks, officers' pavilions, food warehouses, arsenals, water stations, guard-houses, artillery sheds, powder houses, chapels and monumental main gates."
Additionally, the catacombs are particularly a popular spot in the fortress to visit.
The Petrovaradin Fortress has a great history of war behind it. It began construction under the Roman Rule and was later expanded by the Cistercian monks around the 13th century. The fortress was captured by the Ottomans in 1526 but eventually won over by the Austrians in 1687.
The Austrian Empire decided to remodel the fortress, which ended up taking over 90 years from demolition to completion.
The long construction paid off as it was the strongest fortress in the empire with "a garrison of 4000 people, 400 canons and massive gunpowder warehouses."
It was eventually demilitarized and in 1991 it was officially added to Spatial Cultural-Historical Units of Great Importance list.
Touring this military wonder is perfect for any history buff. Take a glimpse into the past where the art of war was once on great display.
AmaWaterways is all about bringing travelers to new destinations to create unforgettable memories.
