Coined by revered playwright Henrik Ibsen in his 1859 poem "On the Heights," it's "a philosophy that captures the importance of connecting with Mother Nature on both a physical and spiritual level and describes a way of life that is spent exploring and appreciating nature," according to Hurtigruten.

Visitors to Norway's cities may be surprised by the absence of native Norwegians on weekends. Where did they go? Into the wild for a dose of Friluftsliv! In fact, during summer vacations, neighbors see each other more in the mountains than back home.
Hurtigruten has planned activities that embrace the Friluftsliv way of life, and says, "We want to show you, and share with you, what we Norwegians love. We hope you will experience happiness around a campfire or out on the trails, or over a cup of coffee or tea made and enjoyed together in the great outdoors."
