Are Cruise Passengers Taking Hidden Rubber Ducks Too Far?

Don’t take it too far. There is a point of exceeding boundaries and ruining a good time.

Such is the case with the rubber ducky on cruise ships phenomenon. This is where passengers hide a rubber duck on cruise ships for others to find, kind of a de facto scavenger hunt.

It’s fun. It’s harmless. It’s whimsical.

Until it isn’t.

A Reddit user recently wrote:

“Just saw a post about someone leaving one of those stupid cruise ducks at a what looks to be an historic aqueduct in Naples, Italy,” the original poster explained. “I think it’s bad enough doing that on the actual ships, but to leave them at UNESCO heritage sites? People that is pretty much littering. Just don’t!”

No, don’t, please. Don’t ruin a good thing.

Hiding a rubber duck on a cruise ship is one thing, but putting it in a historical place is quite another. There’s a time and a place for everything, and this is neither the time nor the place. In some ways, it reminds me of the story of the girl who took a selfie at Auschwitz.

And people wonder why some cities have a problem with too much tourism. It’s the whole ‘one bad apple’ theory.

The social media user clearly has an issue with the whole roper ducky thing. While I disagree, I do agree that some places are just sacrosanct. Another person on social media wrote:

“I actually like a bit of ducks onboard but totally agree with you. Keep them on the ship or on you. The ducks are for the ship. No where else.”

So far, most cruise lines have been tolerant of the rubber duck practice. But they might not be if this becomes a standard practice of taking them off the ship and dumping and littering in a historic place.

Don’t take it too far. And don’t ruin it for everybody.
