Is it safe to visit Cuba?
That's the question I received from multiple people when I mentioned I'd be cruising to the Bahamas, Key West and Cuba on Norwegian Cruise Line.
The answer is yes, but travelers should always be aware of their surroundings just as they should anywhere they travel.
Cuba is currently at a level 2 travel advisory for "exercise increase caution," just like France, United Kingdom and many other countries some travelers don't think twice about visiting.
So, if it's on your list, what are you waiting for?
Cruising into Havana is your best bet right now, and you won't regret it.
When you step off the boat and walk into the city, you'll see an assortment of things that will hit all of your emotions.
The cool classic cars, the stunning architecture, famous buildings and historic monuments will take you back to the past for a moment. Let your imagination run wild on how extravagant life was in this thriving city back in the day.
But as you ride around in that car or walk down the old streets to the market, the rundown structures and poverty will bring you back to reality.
Unfinished buildings and poverty can be found in a number of countries around the world, but in Havana, it has sort of a different feeling to it because of how the last several decades have played out. It's not easy to describe, which is why you need to visit now before governments possibly get in the way.
There is so much potential in Cuba. These next few years will be crucial to its continued tourism growth.
You can take a tour through your cruise line, book a private tour with a local company as long as they meet the current guidelines outlined by the government, or feel free to opt to wander on your own.
Do expect taxi drivers in classic cars and men on horse and carriages to try and get you to ride with them. As we stood by the water taking pictures of our cruise ship, several passed by and offered a one-hour tour, some requesting 20 CUC and others requesting 30 CUC.
I recommend getting the travel Visa well ahead of your trip and discussing with your travel agent as to what type of tour would be best for you and your travel crew. Whether it's through the cruise line or a private local company, features walking and riding or ventures out to the countryside, the tour has the power to change you.
Experiencing even just a small taste of Cuba up close and personal is something I will never forget.

Advice from an Agent
Karen Rutter is a Cruise & Vacation Consultant for Expedia Cruise Ship Centers. She can be reached at [email protected]
When asked what advice she would give travelers interested in visiting Cuba, Rutter said:
"Be aware that Cuba is not handicap accessible. Understand that you must have a VISA and must declare an acceptable "reason" for visiting Cuba as established by the government. Have an open mind and look beyond the buildings that are crumbling and the poverty that is pervasive. See the beauty in the country and the beauty in the people. Wander the streets. Get into the countryside. Respect differences. Eat the food. Take a ride in a classic car. Credit cards are not widely accepted. Cubans expect to be paid in Cuban Currency. Places to exchange money is available to visitors."
When asked what advice she would give to travel agents when it comes to selling their clients on Cuba related travel, Rutter said:
"Let clients know that Cuba is a very safe country and that the people are warm, welcoming and friendly. Cubans are eager to interact and have conversations with visitors. Travel to Cuba yourself to know first-hand how to advise clients. Try authentic Cuban food. Consider a local travel company. Fertours is an excellent reliable local company with excellent communication. They will create custom tours for the clients."
