Could Trump’s Policies Lead to a Travel Industry Downturn?

Will the Trump administration’s approach to tariffs and foreign policy cause measurable damage to the US travel industry? Political rhetoric could reshape global travel patterns and have real economic consequences.

Warning Signs

Canada provides a clear example of how diplomatic tensions translate into economic damage. The U.S. Travel Association reports that Canada is the top source of international visitors, with 20.4 million visits last year generating $20.5 billion in spending and supporting 140,000 American jobs.

However, a recent Leger 360 poll found that nearly half of Canadians (48%) are less likely to visit the U.S. this year. Most concerning, higher-income households ($100K+) are significantly more likely to reduce their travel to the U.S. (57%).

Real-World Impacts

Industry professionals are witnessing these effects firsthand:

“Canadians feel disrespected, and that’s very challenging to them because we have always been such loyal partners,” Catherine Prather, president of the U.S.-based National Tour Association, told NPR.

McKenzie McMillan, a travel consultant, told the Associated Press: “We've seen a complete drop off in any new requests for U.S. travel,” adding that “The majority of the reason why we're seeing people avoid the U.S. right now has to do with the tariffs and the 51st state comments.”

This tension doesn't just affect inbound tourism—it impacts American travelers too. According to a Global Rescue Survey, 72% of travelers believe Americans will be perceived more negatively abroad due to these policies.

Why would someone spend thousands of dollars in a country where they feel unwelcome? The answer is they won’t.

Real Consequences

By implementing policies that alienate visitors, the United States doesn't just lose tourism revenue—it loses jobs, economic growth and opportunities for cultural exchange.

If the administration continues to prioritize confrontational rhetoric and policies against its closest allies, the travel industry—which supports millions of American jobs—could become collateral damage in a misguided political strategy. These policies are demonstrably harming an industry vital to America's economic health and international standing.
