JetBlue Airways is expanding its service to the Caribbean.

The New York-based airline today added once-daily nonstop service from New York's John F. Kennedy International Airport to Piarco International Airport in Port of Spain, Trinidad and Tobago.

On May 1, additional nonstop service from Fort Lauderdale will commence, increasing JetBlue's offering to two daily flights between the U.S. and Trinidad and Tobago. To celebrate the airline's newest route, flights from New York to Port of Spain are on sale from $169 one way for travel between March 13 and June 12, 2014 (blackout dates April 9, 2014 through April 29, 2014). Tickets must be booked by March 3, 2014.

JetBlue now offers nonstop service to 25 destinations in the region with up to 200 daily flights to, from and within the Caribbean.

"We are pleased to provide customers with JetBlue's award-winning service, while also lowering fares to Trinidad and Tobago," JetBlue President Robin Hayes said in a statement. "With a large diaspora in New York City and South Florida, our new service will connect Trinidadians to family and friends in the U.S. This new route will also provide convenient service for those traveling for pleasure."

"We are pleased to welcome Jet Blue and its award-winning service to Trinidad and Tobago, as it will provide additional travel options to both the business community as well as the leisure traveller to and from the U.S," said Stephen Cadiz, Trinidad and Tobago's Minister of Transportation.

First fare hike goes into effect, initiated by Delta

The first fare hike of the year went into effect over the weekend as Delta Air Lines raised domestic tickets $10 per round-trip flight. The hike was tempered, however, by the news that it only came on higher fares booked at the last minute.

Farecompare.com, which tracks airline ticket prices, noted that United Airlines and Southwest Airlines (its subsidiary, AirTran Airways) matched the fare.

Emirates to begin daily service to Chicago-O'Hare

Emirates Airline will launch daily service to Chicago's O'Hare Airport beginning August 5, the carrier announced Feb. 24.

Chicago will become the airline's ninth gateway in the USA, following soon after the commencement of its services to Boston on March 10.

Tim Clark, President of Emirates Airline, said in a statement: "Chicago has long been a destination in the United States which Emirates has wished to serve. Like Dubai, Chicago is a major global trade and transportation hub with great cultural diversity that is an economic engine for its region. We welcome the chance to establish a non-stop trade bridge between these two great cities and, via our Dubai hub, to more efficiently link Chicago-area passengers and shippers with our international network beyond Dubai to over 140 destinations spanning six continents. This is good news for trade and tourism for both cities, and jobs that rely on both, as well as for consumers who will benefit from greater competitive choice."

"Chicago welcomes Emirates, one of the world's largest international airlines, to our city," said Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel. "Air transport links are critical for trade and tourism, and Emirates' non-stop daily flights to Dubai will only add to our global connectivity and further our goal to host 55 million visitors by 2020, in turn generating jobs not only at the airport but across Chicago's travel and hospitality industries."

Ethiopian Airlines to Increase Service to London

Ethiopian Airlines, which has had uninterrupted service to London since 1973 with weekly flights, is expanding to daily service from Addis-Ababa to Heathrow, the carrier said today.

Previously, Ethiopian offered six weekly flights to London.

"We are very happy to finally be able to offer daily service to our customers to and from London," Ethiopian Airlines CEO Tewolde Gebremariam said in a release. "Due to the airport congestion at London Heathrow, we were previously constrained to six weekly flights. Now our customers to and from London can enjoy convenient and hassle-free daily connections with our state-of-the art B787 aircraft, which offers the ultimate on-board comfort with reduced noise, the largest windows in the sky, dimmable lights, high ceilings and higher cabin humidity."
