There was a time when the city of Austin,
Texas, was considered a hot airline market. Apparently, things have changed.
Both American Airlines and Allegiant have
announced they are making cutbacks in their trips, in and out of the city
of Austin. It’s a far cry from 2021 when American
announced 14 new routes to Austin and Allegiant opened a crew base there.
American
also plans to remove service from Austin to Las Vegas, New Orleans, Orlando, Palm
Springs, and Reno in October.
“As part of the continuous evaluation of
our network, American will reduce service from Austin (AUS) starting in
October. American will continue to offer customers access to our comprehensive
global network of more than 350 destinations with one-stop connections. We’re
proactively reaching out to impacted customers and apologize for any
inconvenience this may cause,” the carrier said.
American will continue to service Austin
from many of its pub airports, including Dallas-Fort Worth,
Charlotte, Los Angeles and 10 other cities.
Allegiant has not only cut routes from its schedule but also closed its crew base in Austin. It was attributed to a lack of gate space at Austin-Bergstrom. According to KUT News, the cuts include Bozeman, Eugene, Sioux Falls, Washington-Dulles, Indianapolis, Omaha, Pittsburg, San Diego, Louisville, Orlando-Sanford and Santa Ana/Orange County.
“We’re hoping to backfill some of those
seats with other carriers and encourage Allegiant to fly to other Allegiant
bases that they currently don’t fly to (from) Austin,” the airport’s business
development director Jamy Kazanoff told KUT.
