Next summer, American Airlines will launch a new route from the East Coast to one of Portugal’s most popular cities.
The Dallas-based carrier just announced plans to begin a new nonstop flight from Philadelphia (PHL) to Porto (ORO) in summer 2027.
The coastal Portuguese city is famous for its fortified wine, its UNESCO-listed historic city center, and its colorful buildings clad in traditional ceramic tiles. Porto also sits at the mouth of the Douro River, making it the starting point for many river cruises through Douro valley.
American plans to use its single-aisle Airbus A321XLR plane, outfitted with its new Flagship Suites business class cabin, to operate daily flights on the summer seasonal route. The aircraft will offer 20 suites with sliding privacy doors, mattress pads, dual-sided pillow, duvet, slippers, and noise-cancelling headphones.
“Porto is exactly the type of new market the Airbus A321XLR enables us to serve,” said Brian Znotins, American’s senior vice president of network and schedule planning.
The new transatlantic service is still subject to final government approval, so additional details, like an exact launch date, are still forthcoming. American already serves the Portuguese capital city of Lisbon from Philadelphia.
The carrier has been focused on growing its Philadelphia hub as a key transatlantic gateway in recent years, launching new routes from PHL to Edinburgh and Milan in spring 2025.
This year, the airline will also add new nonstop flights from PHL to Budapest and Prague beginning in May 2026. “While we’ll have even more new routes to share later this year for summer 2027, we’re eager to continue growing our long-haul network that features service to new destinations, including Budapest, Hungary, and Prague that will start this summer,” Znotins said.
