Local authorities in Maui are investigating a corpse found in the wheel well of United Airlines Flight 202 after its arrival at Kahului Airport on Tuesday, December 24.
According to the Associated Press, the Boeing 787-10’s wheel well was accessible only from the outside of the aircraft. There is no concrete information on how or why the person accessed the wheel well and climbed inside. There is also no information discovered about who the person was.
The flight took off from Chicago to Maui on Christmas Day, where the active investigation is ongoing with the Maui Police Department.
So-called wheel well stowaways are rare, but they aren’t unheard of. Stowaways face severe risks of death, with the large majority of stowaways dying while in the air, in large part due to the risks of hypothermia and hypoxia, which is the lack of oxygen to the body caused by being in extremely high altitudes.
