Starting June 1, travelers flying out of Boston Logan International Airport will be able to test out a nationwide-first: a remote airport terminal that will provide an alternative security screening process than the rest of the airport, saving travelers both time and, potentially, money on parking.
Boston’s Logan Airport Remote Terminal will be available for eligible Delta Air Lines and JetBlue passengers. Located at 19 Flutie Pass on Route 9 in Framingham, Massachusetts, the remote terminal is located 23 miles from the airport.
According to the airport’s website, it’ll work on a reservation system for eligible passengers, and cost an additional $9 to reserve. Travelers will be able to park at 400 parking spots at the Framingham terminal for $7 a day, according to CBS, and will go through airport-style security screening at the remote terminal and check their bags.
They’ll then be bussed right to their airport gate at Boston Logan, with each bus carrying up to 55 passengers. When the program launches, a bus will run between the airport and the remote terminal every hour from 4:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. Bags will be bussed over too, with both passengers and luggage remaining secure the entire time.
The goal of the program? To ease long TSA lines at Boston Logan, free up congestion on the roads heading to the airport and create an easier airport experience for travelers.
"After you drop your bags off and get your boarding pass, you'll be able to enter and go through a full TSA screening checkpoint lane, very similar to like you would at the airport," Peter Howe, Massport's Deputy Director of Roadway Management, told reporters.
"It's going to be more seamless, more convenient for the passengers and the traveling public," said Howe. "We want to see how this pilot goes to see kind of what we can learn from it and how we can expand.”
