A British Airways passenger’s gift to flight attendants has reportedly gone awry and sent three cabin crew members to the hospital.
According to a report in UK newspaper The Sun, a passenger on a recent flight from London to Los Angeles gave British Airways’ cabin crew members a bag of gummy bears as a thank you for their service on board.
It’s not uncommon for passengers to give crew members small tokens of appreciation like chocolates or gift cards after a flight, especially around holidays.
On the way to their hotel after the flight arrived, three of the crew members shared the candies and soon began to feel unwell.
Upon closer inspection of the candy’s package, the flight attendants discovered that the gummies were in fact marijuana edibles, containing 300mg of THC, a large amount of the active drug in cannabis, which would produce an intense high.
By the time the crew reached their hotel, the three flight attendants were experiencing “out-of-body” sensations, leaving them panicked and scared, The Sun reports. As their symptoms became worse, the three crew members were taken to the hospital, where they were treated and made a full recovery.
British Airways sent a replacement crew to operate the return flight to London. The airline is reportedly trying to track down the passenger who gifted the gummies, and that person could face charges from police.
Although marijuana use is legal in numerous destinations, it is still illegal to bring the substance through airport security in the United States under federal law.
