As summer travel began to wind down in August 2026, air travel news and headlines continued to ramp up.

From airfares continuing to get more expensive and exciting new fleet upgrades beginning to roll out at major airlines, to more premium perks coming to airports around the country, there was significant air travel news throughout the month.

Here’s a look at the most notable air travel headlines from August 2026.

Airfares Continued Their Dramatic Summer Climb

Airline ticket prices continued to increase over the summer, according to data released in August 2026. Average economy tickets were 17% more expensive in July 2026 compared to the same month in 2025, according to Airlines Reporting Corporation.

Even so, travel demand didn’t appear to slow down amid the elevated prices. ARC’s data showed sales jumped 18% in July to a total of $9.6 billion.

Travelers have been contending with higher airfares by using information to find flights that might still be reasonably priced. An August report from Going, for instance, identified the U.S. airports with the most flight deals so far in 2026. Among the top deal-focused airports were Denver, which ranked No. 1 for the most deals on domestic flights, and Boston, which was the top airport for international flight deals.

In another spot of good news, August likely brought some relief to fliers searching for affordable flights, as it’s the best month to score last-minute international flight deals, according to data from Expedia.

Airlines Launched Swanky New Fleet Upgrades

U.S. carriers were busy this month announcing and rolling out new planes and cabin products. Delta is still working to get its next-generation Delta One business class suites approved by federal regulators, so it has retrofitted one of its Airbus A321neo planes with 44 first-class seats in the meantime. The carrier says it routinely books 80% of the massive premium cabin, showing the high demand for premium seats.

United announced this month that it plans to make its largest-ever summer expansion in 2027, with half of the new routes operated by its forthcoming Airbus A321XLR planes. Delivery of the single-aisle jets have been delayed, but the carrier says it’s confident it will have enough of the planes by next summer.

United was also cleared in August to use the sliding doors on its new Polaris business class suites, adding an extra touch of privacy and exclusivity for travelers.

American Airlines made a huge announcement that it would be upgrading its entire narrowbody fleet with seatback screens and a larger number of premium seats across the single-aisle jets.

Some carriers also got good news this month when the FAA gave its long-awaited certification to the Boeing 737 Max 7 plane, which had been caught up in years of delays. U.S. airlines like Southwest and Allegiant have placed orders for the jet.

Airports Get More Premium Perks and Safety Upgrades

Throughout the month, both airlines and federal regulators were busy making upgrades at U.S. airports.

Carriers added new premium spaces and perks to some of their key terminals. JetBlue debuted its second BlueHouse lounge location in Terminal C at Boston Logan International Airport (BOS), one of its focus cities. The 12,000-square-foot space will offer Boston-themed decor, drinks, and dining.

For its part, American Airlines announced the expansion of a lounge perk previously only reserved for first class passengers. The carrier said that starting in September, certain business class fliers will be able to access its Flagship dining areas at its top-tier lounges at Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport (DFW) and Miami International Airport (MIA). The Flagship dining experience in Los Angeles (LAX) is set to reopen by the end of the year.

At the same time, federal regulators were rolling out new technology and grants to help airports add new safety equipment. New Jersey’s Newark Liberty International Airport (EWR) unveiled new radar to monitor runways as part of its $30 million air traffic control overhaul.

The Department of Transportation also announced two rounds of federal grants that allotted $615 million and $870 million to hundreds of airports in nearly every state for improvements to facility structures, runway and taxiway infrastructure, family-friendly features in terminals, and more.
