In what seems like a year filled with close calls at airports and on runways across the U.S., another one happened. This one took place at Newark Liberty International Airport in New Jersey.
The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) is investigating an incident where a helicopter pilot came a little too close for comfort to a departing United Airlines jet. It happened on October 9.
There have been a plethora of incidents of near-catastrophic encounters, so much so that the FAA recently called an emergency meeting of airport administrators at nearly 100 airports.
This time around, the helicopter pilot had to be told by an air traffic controller that he was too close to a United plane that was departing on an adjacent runway. The air traffic controller had to instruct the helicopter pilot to move away from the nearby runway.
Fortunately, no one was hurt in the near-miss and catastrophe was averted.
This remains an ongoing concern as the FAA called its emergency meeting less than two months ago.
