Lufthansa Cancels Hundreds of Flights Amid Labor Action

Lufthansa has been forced to scrap hundreds of flights amid a 27-hour labor strike at five airports across Germany.

The strike, which is being conducted by ground staff, started at 4 a.m. Feb. 7 local time and was slated to last until 7:10 a.m. Feb. 8 local time, The Points Guy reported.

The airports impacted by the labor action include:

• Frankfurt Airport (FRA)
• Munich Airport (MUC)
• Berlin Brandenburg Airport (BER)
• Dusseldorf Airport (DUS)

More than 500 flights had to be canceled as a result of the labor walk-out. The airline is expected to operate merely 10 percent to 20 percent of its scheduled flights while the event unfolds. The worst hit airports are Berlin and Hamburg, which had to cancel all Lufthansa departures on Feb. 7.

However, passengers that have been impacted are able rebook flights at no charge or convert their airline ticket into rail passes for domestic travels.

"Due to the warning strike called by the trade union Verdi on Wednesday and Thursday ... extensive effects on the flight program are expected during this period," Lufthansa said in a statement on X earlier this week. "Affected guests will receive initial information by email or in the app from around 4 p.m. today.”

The union is seeking a wage increase of about 12.5 percent in the face of inflation. It’s also pursuing increased bonuses and overtime pay, The Points Guy reported.

Lufthansa has repeatedly been impacted by labor strikes over the past year. In March 2023, the airline was also the focus of a walkout that disrupted travel and grounded flights.
