New 'e-gates' operated by Clear have arrived at a handful of U.S. airports with more to come in the months ahead.

The gates are currently being tested at three airports including Oakland International Airport, where a reporter for The Points Guy was recently given a first-hand look, as well as Oklahoma City's Will Rogers World Airport (OKC) and South Carolina's Greenville-Spartanburg International Airport (GSP).

Travelers who have membership in Clear's expedited security program will be able to use the new gates during the current trials.

Currently, the new gates allow travelers to self-screen using their boarding pass. But over the long-term the gates will process passengers using biometric technology.

After being verified by the new e-gates, travelers will be taken to the front of the security line to undergo baggage screening, as would normally occur.

The new gates also have the capability to flag a Clear or airport employee if a traveler attempting to pass through the checkpoint does not possess Clear membership, according to The Points Guy.

"We’re excited to bring this pilot to Oakland and give our members the best possible experience so they can win the day of travel," Vladimir Stojkovski, vice president of product management, told TravelPulse. "Today, our eGate verifies your boarding pass—but we see a future where they power the entire identity experience, enabling a fully automated lane where travelers never have to break stride."

Clear is investing significantly in e-gates and lane automation technology. The goal is to eventually have a completed automated process available for Clear participants.

The gates will next be available at Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport (DCA) and still more airports over the coming summer.
