There was a mishap between two Delta Air Lines planes in Atlanta on Tuesday morning that looked worse than it was, but nonetheless raises further concern about
runway safety.
A Delta jet clipped a smaller regional aircraft operated by Endeavor Airlines on a
taxiway at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport.
There were no reported injuries, but the tail was torn
off the Delta regional jet after being struck by the Airbus A350's wingtip. That smaller, commuter plane was flying from
Georgia to Louisiana while the much larger Delta plane was heading to Tokyo.
The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) is investigating.
Delta said in a statement it was working with both
airlines to accommodate passengers. The incident happened at
about 10 a.m. local time.
“We apologize to our customers for this experience,”
Delta said.
"There is minimal impact to airport
operations," an airport spokesperson said in a statement. "Passengers
from one of the aircraft are being bussed from the incident to the concourses. The
second aircraft taxied under its own power to a concourse where passengers will
deplane at their gate."
The FAA said last year it
is investing more than $120 billion to prevent runway incidents.
