Some called it the trip of a lifetime, and why not? How often do you get to take a plane to the North Pole to meet Santa Claus?
United Airlines did just that once again in what has become a wonderful annual tradition for the carrier. United flew a group of children from Newark Liberty International Airport to Santa's workshop to see how toys are made and meet the man himsef, who was armed with gifts.
The children were patients at University Hospital in New Jersey and Newark Beth Israel Medical Center, as well as some youngsters who came from disadvantaged backgrounds.
Now, sshhhh. Don't tell the kids, but the flight did actually take off for a short ride, but landed again at the airport and pulled up to a gate that was decorated like the North Pole.
This is the 21st year United has done its "Fantasy Flight" program all over the country. And it's not the only airline to do such a trip. Last year, for instance, Delta Air Lines took almost 150 school children impacted by Hurricane Sandy to the North Pole as part of its "Holiday at the Hangar" at New York's John F. Kennedy International.
