US Airlines on Deadline with China Over Taiwan Recognition
Airlines & Airports Donald Wood June 26, 2018

With time running out before China’s demands must be met regarding the recognition of Taiwan as part of the country, several United States airlines serving the destination risk losing mainland passengers if they don’t make the adjustment.
According to the South China Morning Post, U.S. airlines such as Delta and American have yet to make the changes demanded by China about addressing Taiwan. As a result, they could be facing air traffic control delays, ramp inspections, hold-ups at immigration and security checks if they do not comply.
United, Delta, American and other carriers have until July 25 to comply with the new rules set forth by the Chinese government, but the airlines are working with officials in the U.S. to determine if they will make the requested changes.
Several carriers, including Japan Airlines, All Nippon Airways and Qantas Airways have already made the necessary changes regarding Taiwan on their websites. If the U.S. airlines don’t succumb to the pressure, China could call on mainland travelers to boycott American carriers and approve fewer package tours.
The relationship between the Chinese government and U.S. President Donald Trump is being tested as the two sides battle in a growing trade war. China is also not happy with the budding relationship between America and Taiwan.
Carries in the U.S. aren’t the only companies questioning the demands, as Air India revealed it would leave the decision about whether to change how it identifies Taiwan to the Indian government.
