For travelers looking to see the changing leaves and fall landscapes of the Hudson River Valley, the Amtrak Autumn Express excursion returns for another year with two special trips.

On October 14 and 15, passengers will depart from the New York Penn Station on the historic train ride along a route that hasn't seen regular passenger service in decades.

Travelers will be treated to stunning scenery along the scenic path.

The Amtrak Autumn Express excursion will travel from New York Penn Station, pass underneath the Hudson River and stop in Newark, New Jersey, to allow more passengers to board and switch from electric to diesel power.

Following the stop in Newark, the Amtrak train will change directions and head toward Jersey City for a quick glimpse of the New York Harbor before traveling north. The Autumn Express excursion will eventually arrive on the west bank of the Hudson River just below Haverstraw, where passenger trains have not run in years.

Amtrak officials noted that the train will not make a stop in Newark on the return journey. Passengers will need to make necessary travel arrangements from New York Penn Station to Newark.During the Amtrak Autumn Express train ride, passengers will pass historic landmarks, including Bear Mountain Bridge, Storm King Mountain, the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, Newburgh and the Poughkeepsie Bridge.

The journey will also pass small communities such as Catskill, Athens and Ravena.

Once the train crosses the Alfred H. Smith Memorial Bridge at Castleton, it will descend onto the Amtrak Hudson line for a scenic 112-mile run down the east shore of the Hudson River on the classic ex-NYC Water Level Route. Highlights of the journey include Hudson, Rhinecliff, Pollepel Island (Bannerman's Castle), Break Neck Tunnel and Peekskill.

Tickets for the Autumn Express excursions go on sale September 12 and are priced at $169 each for adults. Children's tickets are half price for each adult ticket and can be purchased through the official Amtrak website.
