A regional Amtrak train heading to Boston had to be evacuated after the locomotive lost power, stranding passengers for over an hour in a dark tunnel in Baltimore without air conditioning during the heatwave of Monday, June 23.
According to ABC News, Train 94, which is an Amtrak Northeast Regional train, lost power due to a malfunction near Baltimore’s Penn Station. According to a passenger, the train had experienced power issues prior to departure.
The passengers of the locomotive sat in sweltering conditions underground for over an hour. They were provided with bottled water and small snacks.
A video obtained by CBS News Baltimore shows the conditions of the passengers as they waited in the train to be evacuated.
Amtrak commented, “We apologize to our customers for the inconvenience…After a locomotive malfunction, passengers on Amtrak Train 94 were transferred to Baltimore Station and then provided train service to their final destination.”
At 5:02 p.m. ET, the passengers were evacuated from the train and brought back onto the train station platform, where they could find alternate transportation.
