A cruise ship crashed into a United States Navy pier in Guam Sunday, causing an estimated $3 million in damage.
According to KUAM.com, Japan-based Nippon Maru collided with Delta Pier in Guam's Apra Harbor at 9:14 p.m. local time, leaving a massive gash in the side of the ship, which was carrying more than 500 passengers and 224 crew at the time of the incident.
The U.S. Coast Guard has launched an investigation into the crash, with early estimates claiming the damage to the pier will cost an estimated $3 million to repair. As a result, the majority of the passengers and crew members onboard the ship were flown out of Guam.
"The accident is unfortunate, but we are thankful that the passengers and crew members were not injured," Port Authority of Guam general manager Joanne Brown said.
The Nippon Maru is the only cruise ship in the fleet of Tokyo-based Mitsui O.S.K. Lines Ltd, which specializes in commercial lines, including car carriers and tankers. The vessel was built in 1990.
Guam's Apra Harbor is the entry point for a U.S. naval base, which acts as a strategic location for the military in the Pacific Ocean.
