Travellers planning to set sail this season can rest a little easier—cruise ships aren't the norovirus breeding grounds they're often made out to be.
Despite attention-grabbing headlines, norovirus outbreaks on cruise ships remain rare compared to their frequency on land. That’s the central message of a recent Cruise Radio article, which breaks down the facts behind the fear.
Norovirus is a highly contagious virus that causes vomiting and diarrhea. It spreads easily through contaminated food, surfaces, or close contact.
But the cruise industry, particularly when compared to land-based travel, faces disproportionately high scrutiny.
The Numbers: Land vs. Sea
Canada reports approximately 1 million norovirus cases annually, accounting for over 25% of all foodborne illnesses, with outbreaks most common between November and April, typically in schools, hospitals, and long-term care facilities, and less frequently on cruise ships.
All outbreaks are nationally notifiable and monitored through the Canadian Notifiable Disease Surveillance System and National Enteric Surveillance Program.

Only 16 outbreaks were reported across the entire cruise industry in 2024, impacting fewer than 900 people.
So far in 2025, there have been 17 confirmed outbreaks aboard ships, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).
Cruise lines are required to report any outbreak once 2% of pax and crew, or 3% of guests alone, become ill.
That kind of transparency leads to swift media coverage—coverage that doesn’t usually follow similar outbreaks at resorts, amusement parks, or airports.
As Cruise Radio notes, “If you contract the bug while on a plane, you will get just as sick and are likely to spread the infection to as many people as you would on a cruise ship, but... such incidents are not usually reported.”
Ships today are equipped with extensive cleaning protocols and hand sanitizing stations, and cruise lines act quickly to isolate and treat affected guests.
As Cruise Radio reports, outbreaks seem more common on ships not because they are more common but because they’re more carefully tracked.
The Public Health Agency of Canada’s (PHAC)Travelling Public Program conducts unannounced compliance inspections of cruise ships at seven Canadian ports, assessing sanitation (86/100 score minimum).
Tips to Stay Healthy While Cruising
To reduce illness risk on cruises experts suggest washing hands often, use hand sanitizer (especially at buffets), avoid touching high-contact surfaces, and visit the ship’s medical centre immediately if you feel sick, as most waive fees to curb spread.
