Over the past few days, a new viral social
media saga about a so-called “Bro
Cruise” has emerged on Threads, capturing the imaginations of around 1.5
million users thus far.
User raleighcheesy, whose real
name is Courtney Bowman from Raleigh, North Carolina, began posting what she
assumed would be an amusing anecdote about her unnamed friend’s participation
in a bachelor-party-style cruise out of Florida this week.
What she didn’t
anticipate was that the ongoing story of how six men in their 20s to 30s trying
to navigate a Royal Caribbean cruise vacation would resonate with an audience of over a million
users.
The story’s allure
seems to be based purely on the friend group’s lack of planning skills and overall
ineptitude — as reported by Courtney’s friend, who is among the only people in
the party to demonstrate any forethought or common sense when it comes to where
they are going and what they are doing.
For instance, the
first stumbling blocks were evident before the cruise even began, when it became
clear that only one member of the party had secured lodgings for the night
before boarding. Since only one "bro" had planned ahead, and no one wanted to pay
exorbitant last-minute hotel rates, all six somehow ended up crammed into his one-bedroom
Airbnb.
The trip was
pitched to Courtney’s friend as an all-inclusive cruise with a set budget,
which was the only reason he agreed to it. But, the group member who was
supposed to plan things had been continually adding extra expenses into the
bargain, some of the guys realized they failed to book the group’s
excursions, their matching bachelor party attire featured handwritten scrawl
and most other elements of the trip also seemed somewhat slapdash.
Courtney’s friend
and inside source has been dubbed the “Rat King” by the internet because of his
role in spying on the other group members and reporting their antics back to
her, which she then posts out on Threads. The other five men have each been
assigned a color as their identity, so that they can remain anonymous while
news of their various shenanigans is shared with the world.
By Sunday, the
Bro Cruise’ s following had grown to the point where the bros were being gifted
a seaplane safari in their day’s destination (Nassau) by seaplanejp, complete with a limo
transfer and cocktails.
However, none of
the other guys in the group (except for Rat King) have any idea that this is
because their escapades have gone viral on social media. Courtney and her
insider friend made the executive decision not to tell any of them about their
newfound internet fame.
Donations from
the internet audience have also been made to Rat King so that he can pay for onboard
Wi-Fi to continue his clandestine reporting back to Courtney, who has labelled
herself “Bro Cruise Director,” although she admits never having been on a
cruise herself.
It concluded on Monday when the group left the ship, however, not without a bit of drama first.
One "bro", who some have deemed the most problematic, ended up being detained before he was allowed to exit the ship. The details remain scarce, but Courtney was able to report back that all the guys made their flights home.
So we may never know what happened there at the end, just as we may never know the true identity of these men. And perhaps it's that mystique that helped this whole thread go viral in the first place.
