Holland America Line is celebrating a pair of sustainable seafood certifications—one from the Marine Stewardship Council, and the other from the Aquaculture Stewardship Council.

Both designations recognize the cruise line for serving guests high-quality seafood that is sourced sustainably or raised responsibly via Holland America Line’s Global Fresh Fish Program.

According to Holland America Line, it’s the first global cruise line to earn both certifications.

“Our guests care about the quality and sustainability of the fresh fish we serve, and so do we,” said Gus Antorcha, president of Holland America Line. “These certifications build on our commitment of bringing regionally inspired fresh seafood dishes from port to plate in 48 hours. We’re proud to partner with two organizations that share our dedication to protecting the vitality of the oceans we sail.”

The Marine Stewardship Council certification applies to wild-caught seafood, while the Aquaculture Stewardship Council’s designation applies to farmed seafood. Both organizations are working to minimize the environmental impacts of the human consumption of fish.

All 11 ships in Holland America Line’s fleet can now serve seafood bearing the Marine Stewardship Council and Aquaculture Stewardship Council labels. Onboard menus will have a symbol next to each dish.

The cruise line will roll out the initiative across five ships starting in May at the beginning of the Europe and Canada/New England season: Volendam, Rotterdam, Nieuw Statendam, Zuiderdam and Oosterdam. The company’s six ships sailing in Alaska already serve sustainable seafood under the Responsible Fisheries Management certification.

Not all species being served on Holland America line ships are certified, but the cruise line is working toward 100 percent accreditation.

Examples of certified seafood include: Asian barramundi, Tasmania Atlantic salmon, Canadian and New England haddock, Hawaiian swordfish, Mediterranean sardine, Mexican tuna, Northern European dover sole and South American Chilean sea bass.
