Juneau, Alaska, To Vote On Cruise Regulations

Juneau, Alaska, is about to join the fray. This week, the state’s capital city will vote on whether to regulate cruise ships that visit.

Juneau is one of the most popular cities in the United States for cruising.

The Alaskan city has become the latest worldwide city to protest what it believes is a phenomenon called over-tourism.

The vote to restrict the number of cruise ships appears to be split. Some residents whose businesses rely on tourism welcome the visitors; others less so. The proposed regulation includes a ban on ships carrying 250 or more passengers disembarking to Juneau on Saturdays, which would disqualify the mega ships that frequent the area.

Juneau only has about 32,000 residents.

It is the only state capital in the United States without a main road connecting it to the rest of the state, hence the unusually high number of visitors by plane and cruise ship. It is popular because of its proximity to glaciers and the proximity to seeing whales and Kodiak bears.

The city’s depiction of the gold rush days from more than 150 years ago is also popular.
