Only a few hours from San Diego, just across the Mexican
border, Valle de Guadalupe, or "Valle" as the locals call it, is one
of the fastest growing wine regions of North America.
This premier, somewhat off-the-beaten-path, wine country in
sunny Baja, California produces over 70 percent of all wines coming from
Mexico. And it's one incredibly fun and fascinating
destination to visit. What makes Valle de Guadalupe so distinctive is its
Mediterranean-like climate, sun-drenched vineyards, independent winemakers,
dramatic desert landscapes and long celebrated farm-to-table dining scene.
Valle de Guadalupe’s wine history dates back to the time
when Jesuit priests planted the first grapevines here in the 18th century and
its first winery, Bodegas de Santo Tomas, was established in the late 1800s.
Today, there are over 150 registered wineries with some estimates putting the
number at close to 200, depending on how wineries and small wine producers are
counted.
While there are so many wineries worthy of a visit, these
are some of my favorites, selected for their wines, views, on-site activities,
unique accommodations or outstanding cuisine. Day-trippers should choose two or
three wineries for proper tastings, lunch and enjoying the scenery while
relaxing. Better yet, plan a few-day visit to totally enjoy the many treasures
of this Baja region.

El Cielo
This full-service winery combines vineyard tours and
tastings with restaurants and luxurious accommodations. It’s ideal for travelers
who want to make the winery itself a central part of a wine-country escape. In
Spanish “Cielo” means “sky” or “heaven.” And heavenly is the perfect way to
describe a stay, play and dining experience at this dreamy, unforgettable
property. Wine labels sport astronomically themed names such as Andromeda,
Cassiopeia, Capricornus, Galileo, Hypatia, Orion, and more.
Set amidst mountains, olive trees and surrounded by verdant
vines, El
Cielo offers a boutique hotel experience in elegant Tuscan-style villas
situated on a picturesque, mirrored lake. The pet-friendly resort offers unique
wine-tasting experiences such as blending your own wine, outstanding cuisine, along
with wagon vineyard tours, grape stomping and a fascinating falconry
presentation.

Adobe Guadalupe
Adobe Guadalupe Vineyards & Inn is both a winery and a
boutique bed and breakfast inn with six rustic but well-appointed guestrooms,
each named for an archangel, like their wines, Uriel, Gabriel, Rafael,
Serafiel, Kerubiel and Miguel.
The hacienda-style property surrounded by mountains was
inspired by Persian architectural elements with courtyards, a fountain,
gardens, a library/living room, dining room that serves elegant five-course
dinners, and a large, welcoming kitchen, where a made-to-order breakfast is
served each morning.
Guests can taste Adobe Guadalupe’s superb wines in the
“cava” tasting room or horseback ride on their exotic Azteca horses through the
vineyards and surrounding landscape.

L.A. Cetto
L. A. Cetto is the largest wine producer in Mexico with
verdant vineyards spanning for thousands of acres throughout the region. It’s a
worthwhile stop for travelers interested in the history of winemaking in Baja
California. The family’s winemaking roots date to 1928, and the winery is
particularly recognized for its Nebbiolo and other red wines.
The Cetto family brought Italian winemaking traditions to
Mexico, helping shape the region’s modern wine industry and helping put Valle
de Guadalupe on the international wine map. Visitors can explore the winery and
barrel areas and sample wines through several tasting experiences, winery
tours, and private wine experiences. Its impressive wine boutique sells bottles
from its different ranges, as well as regional products such as olive oil and
olives and sunsets here are absolutely stunning.

Monte Xanic
One of the most respected names in Mexican wine and a
standout destination in Valle de Guadalupe, Monte Xanic was founded in 1987 and
helped pioneer the region's modern premium-wine movement, demonstrating that
Baja California could produce sophisticated wines for an international
audience.
The winery is known for its contemporary architecture,
picturesque vineyard setting and guided tasting experiences, making it a good
choice for travelers who want both excellent wine and a memorable visit. Lago
MX is an outdoor area situated beside the winery's reservoir, where visitors
can enjoy wine, small plates and vineyard views.

Finca La Carrodilla
Known for its environmentally conscious approach to viticulture,
environmental stewardship and sustainable winemaking, this boutique winery
appeals to travelers interested in organic wine production and a relaxed,
garden-like tasting experience. Its terrace provides sweeping panoramic views
of the vineyards and the Guadalupe Valley. Rather than focusing exclusively on wine
production, the estate embraces a broader vision of farming that brings
together vineyards, gardens, livestock, beekeeping and a deep appreciation for
the surrounding ecosystem.
Visitors can arrange guided wine tastings and tours and
explore a working farm with cattle, sheep and goats, contributing to its
agricultural operations and dairy production.
Vena Cava
Likely Valle de Guadalupe wine country’s most distinctive
setting, Vena Cava is famous for its unusual tasting room and original design
by recognized Mexican architect Alejandro D’Acosta. The ceilings, built from
reclaimed fishing boats and other recycled materials give Vena Cava a unique
touch, a favorite for visitors seeking creative architecture and characterful,
experimental wines.
Should you decide to stay the night, Vena Cava’ La Villa de Valle
is a small, intimate and romantic and luxury adults-only boutique hotel
surrounded by vineyards, gardens and mountain scenery. The hotel has six
individually decorated guest rooms, three with chimeneas and balconies,
offering commanding panoramic views of vineyards, olive groves, rows of
fragrant lavender and mountains in all directions.

Casa Frida Winery
Casa Frida is one of the more colorful and distinctive
wine-country destinations in Valle de Guadalupe. More than a traditional
winery, Casa Frida is an artistic and cultural gathering place where Mexican
wine, gastronomy, hospitality and art come together. The property, located in
El Porvenir is inspired by the life and creative spirit of renowned Mexican
artist Frida Kahlo.
Its vibrant architecture, eclectic décor, artwork and
multiple tasting spaces reflect a personality quite different from the valley's
more traditional vineyard estates. Guests can enjoy a rooftop lounge featuring
cocktails, music and sunset views, an outdoor gathering and dining area, Corazón
D'Petra, a culinary experience connected to the property's artistic and family
heritage and Galería D'Petra showcasing Mexican artists and craftspeople. Boutique
accommodations invite guests to turn the winery visit into a full wine-country
getaway with a choice of suites or private houses and villas.
