Juneau, Cruise Lines Sailing to Alaska Agree to New Daily Passenger Limits

City leaders in Juneau and cruise lines sailing to Alaska have agreed to cap daily cruise ship passengers starting in 2026.

The new agreement will limit daily passengers to 16,000 on Sundays through Fridays and 12,000 on Saturdays.

In 2023, a record 1.6 million cruise passengers visited Juneau, reports the Associated Press. The new agreement aims to keep annual visitors at around that number.

Last year, under a separate agreement that took effect this season, the city and cruise lines agreed to a daily limit of five large ships.

The new agreement was negotiated by the Cruise Lines International Association (CLIA) and the City and Borough of Juneau. It also includes a commitment to meet every year to go over the number of visitors and discuss community goals.

“This latest agreement reflects the industry’s ongoing commitment to work with CBJ and the residents of Juneau to deliver win-win partnerships,” says Renée Limoge Reeve, CLIA’s vice president of government and community relations. “We’ve heard the community’s concerns and will continue to partner with CBJ to improve the experience of residents and visitors alike.”
