Mexico Lowers Upcoming Cruise Passenger Tax

Mexico’s new cruise tax will be much lower than originally proposed when it takes effect July 1.

The fee will be $5 per person, down from the $42 initially put forth, reports Riviera Maya News.

Anyone entering the country via cruise ship must pay the fee, called a non-resident duty tax.

It was initially slated to begin in January but was postponed until this summer after cruise lines and port towns raised concerns about its effect on tourism.

The fee will remain $5 for the rest of 2025, but will then gradually increase to $10 in 2026 and $21 in 2027.

Federal officials want to ensure cruise tourism contributes positively to the country’s economy.
