Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings Shares Progress on Sustainability Goals

Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings is making progress toward its sustainability goals.

The company, which owns Norwegian Cruise Line, Oceania Cruises and Regent Seven Seas Cruises, has released its 2023 Sail & Sustain Report.

“We understand that the success of our business is inextricably linked to the health of our planet and communities, and that’s why we are dedicated to holistically integrating sustainability into our business strategy," says Harry Sommer, president and chief executive officer of Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings. "Our commitment to sustainability drives us to maintain high standards of operational excellence, achieve results responsibly, and create lasting value for our business and stakeholders."

Here’s a snapshot of the highlights from the report:

• Norwegian reached its 2024 target of equipping half of its fleet with shore power technology. The company is also on track to equip approximately 70 percent of the fleet by 2025.
• Last year, the company achieved its target of testing a biodiesel blend of fuel across 20 percent of the fleet. Norwegian now hopes to test biodiesel across 40 percent of the fleet by 2024.
• The company boosted its onboard water production. Last year, Norwegian consumed roughly 7.6 million cubic meters of fresh water on its ships, with 89 percent produced on board through evaporators and reverse osmosis plants. The company hopes to reduce water bunkering by 4 percent by 2025.
• Norwegian reduced onboard waste in 2023 by recycling, incinerating or donating roughly 48 percent of total ship waste.
• Last year, through supplier diversity efforts, the company spent more than $635 million with small businesses and businesses with minority, veteran or economically disadvantaged qualifications.
• The company also purchased 3 million carbon offsets from 16 projects around the world.
