Silversea is bringing back primatologist Dr. Biruté Mary Galdikas as a guest lecturer in 2019.
A world-renowned expert in the orangutans of Indonesian Borneo, she'll join two Silver Discoverer voyages, sharing insights with guests about her years devoted to the study, care and preservation of the endangered species. She previously joined sailings in 2016 and 2017, guiding guests on a visit to Camp Leakey and the Orangutan Care Center.
"We're excited that she will be returning next year to provide additional opportunities for conservation-minded travelers to explore Indonesia and help contribute to the efforts to protect the region's endangered wildlife," said Conrad Combrink, Silversea's senior vice president of strategic development for expeditions and experiences.
The two expedition cruises depart on June 24 (Darwin to Bali) and July 9 (Bali to Singapore). Both will explore Indonesia's exotic islands, with the famous Camp Leakey as a highlight. The camp is operated by Dr. Galdikas' non-profit Orangutan Foundation International (OFI).
Silversea is the only cruise line partnering with the camp. It will donate $100 to OFI for each guest on board the two cruises.
The return of Dr. Galdikas is just one in a long line of conservation-focused initiatives for Silversea, which earlier his year also inked a new partnership with ORCA, a leading marine conservation charity in the United Kingdom.
