The U.S. Virgin Islands' St. Thomas Harbor, one of the world's most heavily trafficked cruise ports, is set to expand with the commencement of the Long Bay Landing project.

According to the enterprise's official website, the project will feature the construction of a new pier, an upland area to serve as the "transportation hub for arriving cruise passengers" as well as an area for dredging at the Havensight cruise terminal, allowing more ships and larger, Oasis-class vessels to enter the bustling port.

After completion, the facility will include two parallel docks divided by a pier, with each berth measuring 1,350 feet in length.

However, the Long Bay Landing project's website doesn't specify a timetable for construction.

The project cites new business opportunities, job creation, revenue and safeguards for the future as the primary benefits of the development plans.

As for the motivation behind the new project, stabilizing the U.S. Virgin Islands cruise tourism product, keeping pace with the global industry and staying ahead of competition in the region are the key factors.

Currently, larger cruise ships must dock at the Crown Bay terminal instead of Havensight.

The dock at Havensight was recently extended, allowing sufficient room for three ships. However, Havensight is a busier terminal than Crown Bay and is need of expansion as a result.
