U.S. Coast Guard emergency responders rescued a man who became ill while sailing aboard Princess Cruises’ ship Grand Princess over the weekend.
On Saturday, a 63-year-old passenger reported suffering severe abdominal pain.
On Sunday afternoon, the U.S. Coast Guard’s newly opened air station in Ventura County, California, deployed a MH-60 Jayhawk helicopter to airlift the man off the ship. The vessel was located off the coast of Los Angeles.
The helicopter crews consisted of Lt. Rob Turley, Lt. Miguel Cortez, Petty Officer 2nd Class Curren Hinote and Petty Officer 2nd Class Sam Monahan. The team also had aerial support from a C-27 Spartan aircraft from the U.S. Coast guard air station in Sacramento.
The man was taken to Torrance Memorial Medical Center in Torrance, California.
The incident was the first rescue at sea for the new air station, which is located on Naval Base Ventura County in Point Mugu. The $70 million facility, which opened earlier this year, includes a 43,000-square-foot hangar and a 12,000-square-foot administration building, reports KTLA. It has three MH-60 Jayhawk helicopters and roughly 100 personnel.
