While spring break may officially be upon us, it’s never too late for a little travel inspiration that can be tucked into your travel file for coming years.

For those vacationing with kids, which is a significant portion of spring breakers, we’ve rounded up some of the top family-friendly places to visit without spending a fortune.

From quality time in the outdoors in British Columbia to museum hopping in Washington D.C. (where admission is free), here are some of the best locations for spring break with your kids on a budget.

Panama City Beach, Florida

And it's the abundance of outdoor activities (which cost little to nothing) that makes Panama City Beach an especially budget-friendly destination for families.

The city is home to 27 miles of white sand beaches and nearly 100 public beach access points. Meaning, families can spend entire days swimming, building sandcastles or spotting wildlife along the shoreline at no cost.

At St. Andrews Park (which features five distinct ecological landscapes), families can enjoy everything from swimming and snorkeling to kayaking, fishing, and shelling. Entrance to the park, which has the Gulf of Mexico on one side and St. Andrews Bay on the other, is just $8 per vehicle.

Panama City also happens to be home to one of the world's highest concentrations of Bottlenose dolphins, making sightings surprisingly common from the beach or on sightseeing cruises. Local companies like Blue Dolphin Tours offer two-hour tours for $59 per person.

Beyond the beach, families will find a variety of low-cost classic attractions, including mini-golf courses, arcades and bowling alleys.

"In Panama City Beach, you're greeted with warm Southern hospitality and surrounded by miles of white-sand beaches, turquoise waters and hidden gems that make it easy to chart your own course," says Jayna Leach, senior vice president of marketing and chief Marketing officer at Visit Panama City Beach.

Richmond, British Columbia

Just 25 minutes outside Vancouver, the multi-cultural community of Richmond offers family travelers an opportunity to enjoy food markets, beaches, unique heritage sites, and an abundance of parks.

One of the most memorable cultural highlights in Richmond is the Asian street-food night market. The largest night market in North America, vendors offer all manner of food (everything from crab meat noodles, to BBQ squid, ramen, and Japanese poutine and more) for under $10 during happy hour and drinks for less than $7.

Richmond is also home to an International Buddhist Temple that's modeled after Beijing's Forbidden City, and the Terra Nova Adventure Play Environment (free), which features tandem ziplines, a 10-meter spiral slide, and sustainable timber climbing structures that feel like a massive treehouse, all set against the backdrop of the Fraser River.

Additional not-to-miss stops: the seaside village of Steveston and the Britannia Shipyards National Historic Site, where families can spend an afternoon wandering an eight-acre outdoor historic site on the banks of the Fraser River. The shipyard includes historic stilt houses, a Chinese bunkhouse that was built in 1915 and a shipyard building that was constructed in 1889 to be a salmon cannery.

At Richmond Nature Park (free admission), there are boardwalk-style trails through a more than 100-acre peat bog. The Nature House onsite features interactive exhibits and beehives, making it a great educational stop where kids can learn about local wildlife in a hands-on environment.

"Richmond is a city designed for discovery, where every corner offers a new way for families to connect," says Nancy Small, CEO of Tourism Richmond. "From the imaginative, nature-based play at the Terra Nova Adventure Play Environment to the storied coastal boardwalks of Steveston Village, Richmond offers an abundance of experiences along the pacific coast for all ages."

Calling all travelers with children who love having access to the best of both worlds: urban entertainment and immersive nature activities.

If that sounds like your brood, look no further than Reno Tahoe, a destination offering vibrant arts and culture, along with easy access to nearby outdoor adventures in alpine and desert terrain.

Let's start with downtown first: Reno Tahoe's streets double as a free, open-air art gallery, with Burning Man art located throughout, culminating in the Neon Line District, and 100-plus vibrant murals in MidTown Reno Tahoe.

For some indoor fun, families can experience hands-on learning with a visit to The Discovery Museum (admission $11-$16) or dive deep into more than a century of automobile history at the National Automobile Museum ($13-$16).

When you're ready for quality time in nature, there are many options. Visit Emerald Bay State Park (entrance fee $10 per vehicle), for hiking, biking, boating, swimming and more. Or explore Lake Tahoe's north shore, which offers a variety of beaches, including Kings Beach, Sand Harbor, and Carnelian Bay.

Families can also kayak the stunning waters of Lake Tahoe, taking in the lake's many hidden coves.

Reno Tahoe is a destination where family vacations can feel limitless, even on a tight budget. With plenty of free and low-cost things to do, families don't have to choose between city energy and outdoor adventure," says Mike Larragueta, president and CEO of Visit Reno Tahoe. "Our museums and public art create an affordable, hands-on playground for learning and discovery, and just a short drive away, Lake Tahoe offers endless ways to get outside and explore."

Washington D.C.

The U.S. capital is a great choice for families that love nothing more than spending days exploring museums and historical landmarks. In Washington, D.C., many of the city's top attractions, including museums, are completely free, making it a great destination if you're seeking to keep costs down.

Families can visit the Smithsonian Institution museums, many of which are free and packed with interactive exhibits that appeal to older kids, especially those aged 11-14. The National Air and Space Museum is a particular kid favorite, offering young visitors the chance to see historic spacecraft and flight simulators.

"Children also love visiting the National Air and Space Museum to see historic spacecraft and flight simulators," says David Mason, a single dad and owner of Three Week Traveler, a website that provides practical tips, destination guides, and itineraries. "Another budget-friendly activity is simply walking or biking the National Mall to see iconic monuments and memorials while enjoying the spring weather."

America’s finest city combines beautiful weather, kid-friendly attractions, and plenty of activities that can be enjoyed without spending a fortune.

Family visitors can spend time at the city’s public beaches, where kids can swim, bodyboard, explore tide pools and enjoy the sunshine for free.

Don’t miss the beaches in the Northern San Diego County communities of Encinitas, Del Mar and Solana Beach. Not only are they some of the prettiest stretches of shoreline in the San Diego, but you can also find great dining options in each of the three beach communities and spend time walking around downtown, exploring the shops, art galleries and local culture.

Additional free to low-cost activities in San Diego include walking around the 1,200-acre historic urban cultural park Balboa Park in downtown San Diego, and visiting Seaport Village, which sits right on San Diego Bay and is home to a variety of shops, as well as a historic wooden carousel known as the Fair Park Looff Carousel. (Rides cost just $6.)

“San Diego is brilliant for spring break with kids because you get great weather, fantastic beaches, and world-class attractions,” says Mason.
